Accurate assessment of contaminated land is now of considerable importance. Old landfill sites are being recognised as one of the most active sources of contamination of both air and ground. The time has come to assess the extent of the pollution.
Methane gas migrating from old landfills and contaminating the surrounding area is not only extremely dangerous to people working and living in the affected area, but is also damaging the environment around us. Methane, freely venting from old landfill sites, is the most damaging gas to the ozone layer that we know of.
In addition to the dangers of fire or explosion, the gas produces noxious vapours that may create distress to anyone in the vicinity of the landfill.
Using a combination of techniques, we are able to assess the total quantity of methane being produced within the Landfill, the quantity of gas escaping to atmosphere and the extent of gas migrating to neighbouring land. This information is vital to enable the preparation of a detailed design for a gas control scheme.
Techniques used:
Installation of gas monitoring wells
Shallow & deep monitoring probes
Gas pumping trials
Ground emission surveys
Computer modelling
